Description

Pinocchio remains one of the most popular children’s stories in the world. It has been translated into just about every language and has been adapted to every possible genre.
Pinocchio was written in 1880s by Carlo Collodi from Florence, Tuscany.
The story was first translated into English, in America, by Mary Alice Murray in 1892. It is this that we have used for this physical radio version of the tale.
Apart from an enormous amount of cutting, the text has remained more or less in tact. This is mainly because we aimed to keep as close the original as possible. To dramatise it we used a split narrative technique were the words are shared between ‘4 Voices’.
In this day and age, sound effects are really quite simple. You just go online and buy them. There are sound effects for just about everything. But ... yes there was always going to be a BUT ... that isn’t any fun.
So, to make it real physical radio, the sound effects have to be done on stage, by the actors. Now we have something really interesting.
We are all familiar with the coco nuts for horses hooves. Monty Python and the Holy Grail springs to mind. Be coco nut shells are the tip of a wonderful, mind boggling iceberg. What we a talking about is, Foley. Named after Jack Foley, a Hollywood sound artist who created sounds in a studio for films. The idea is that since catching the background sounds at the same time as filming the actors is next to impossible, you recreate the sounds in a studio afterwards. This will include; footsteps (shoes clipped together), doors closing (a purpose built foley door), heart beats (A tea towel pulled tight rhythmically), the sound of a fire (a plastic bag scrunched gently), a eerie expectant noise (running a finger along the rim of a wine glass). The fun of it is coming up with a way of doing it on stage without relying on pre-recorded stuff.
